About the event

Teen Conservation Work Trip Avalon Catalina Island

February 19–21

This three-day teen conservation work trip to Avalon, Catalina Island is designed to build independence, teamwork, and leadership through real, hands-on environmental service.

Students participate in conservation work in partnership with Bleu World and the Catalina Island Conservancy, including a work day at the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden and a marine conservation work day connected to the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup at Green Pier. Students learn how conservation projects are organized, how community science data is logged through Dive Against Debris®, and why stewardship matters.

HFAC student recent conservation impact highlights in Avalon include:

  • Removal of over 1,600 invasive broom plants from a Catalina trail

  • Participation in the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup, where 260 divers removed 1,492 pieces of debris (1,336 lbs) and 57 marine animals were recovered and returned to the ocean across multiple harbor sites

This is a team-based experience. Teens work with peers of different personalities, collaborate on problem-solving, and share responsibility throughout the trip. In addition to conservation work, students have scheduled free time in Avalon to explore the town, enjoy the waterfront, and practice independence in a supported setting.

Students also collaborate on meal planning, grocery shopping with a budget, cooking, and shared cleanup.
