About the event

MPA Watch Survey Workshop Bundle

Join our class bundle to become an official MPA Watch Volunteer!

This two-part program includes a virtual class on Zoom and an in-person workshop on Catalina Island. Learn about marine protected areas, human use surveys, and how to contribute to ocean conservation while gaining valuable certification. Taught by educator, Kayla Feairheller.

Program Overview:

1️⃣ Virtual Class

During this class, students will learn about the creation of the California Marine Protected Area (MPA) Network, how our ocean ecosystems have responded to the protection, and all of the community science work that goes into managing them today. The program we will be exploring in this session is MPA Watch - A community science effort to monitor the relationship between humans and protected areas of our ocean.

  • Date: Tuesday, April 11th

  • Time: 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM (via Zoom)

  • Learn about marine protected areas and survey methods.

  • Missed the live session? A recording will be available.

2️⃣ In-Person Workshop: MPA Watch Survey Workshop

Required: Marine Protected Area Class

Students will take what they learned in the Marine Protected Area Class and apply it in this workshop as they walk the high tide line at Lover's Cove and Casino Point Dive Park marine protected areas in Avalon on Catalina Island recording data on how humans are using the MPA. This includes collecting data on beach goers and boaters alike! Let’s take a look through our binoculars and start to understand why it’s important to protect the ocean and how humans benefit just as much as the marine life below the surface.

  • Date: Friday, April 14th (time TBD)

  • Location: Lover’s Cove & Casino Point Dive Park, Avalon, Catalina Island

  • Ferry: From Long Beach to Avalon on the Catalina Express

  • Put your knowledge into action! Conduct human use surveys at marine protected areas while exploring Catalina’s natural beauty.
