The Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5,000 square feet of sail!
This trip is led by the Ocean Institute staff. Students will learn about the mechanics of sailing by completing the rigging challenge, lifting and lowering cargo, and other hands-on activities. Students use their communication, leadership and teamwork skills as they row in Dana Point Harbor and learn the physical and mental challenges of living on a tall ship, aboard the Spirit of Dana Point.
Students learn what life was like for merchant sailors in the 1830s. The experience is based on Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s book, Two Years Before the Mast. In this 5 hour, hands-on living history program students raise sail, tour the ship, move cargo and learn how to furl the sails, while being immersed in the maritime history of the day. Students will be separated into various groups with different roles, where one lead in each group will keep order and work alongside their instructor. Students will be working alongside either the 1st Mate, 2nd Mate, and the Captain as they immerse themselves in the Hide Trade of Alta California.
This is an exciting full-day tour for students grades 4th-10th (recommended but flexible)
