Maritime Leadership Academy
Leadership Academy where students will be challenged and called upon to use their communication and teamwork skills to build comradery and trust among their group. This is a 5-hour maritime lesson with dockside activities.
Time & Location
Nov 18, 2022, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr, Dana Point, CA 92629, USA
About the event
The Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5,000 square feet of sail!
This is an incredible Maritime Leadership Academy utilizing traditional sailing skills to help youth develop life-long leadership skills. They will be a trip of self-discovery, challenging them to use critical thinking skills, learning the importance of teamwork, and feeling the exhilaration of success.
These sailing activities challenge students to be outside their comfort zone and succeed through teamwork and leadership skills. Each student will understand how different types of leaderships work together to succeed in a common goal. Dockside activities and rowing longboats in the harbor will be part of the adventure!
This trip is led by the Ocean Institute staff. Students will learn about the mechanics of sailing by completing the rigging challenge, lifting and lowering cargo, and other hands-on activities from the dock. Students use their communication, leadership and teamwork skills as they row longboats in Dana Point Harbor.
