About the event
Join us for an immersive exploration of the nocturnal realm as we unravel the mysteries of bats and their prey. The event kicks off with a warm welcome and icebreaker at the Nature Center, leading to an orientation about the restoration area and a local active bat roost. Setting up moth lighting traps, we venture towards the local bat roost, where participants learn about LA bat species, their role as insectivores, and the captivating world of crepuscular wildlife activity.
As the sun sets, the atmosphere becomes electric with the opportunity to record echolocation calls on an echometer. Gain insights into the basics of echolocation, unique frequencies, and patterns specific to each bat species.Â
Witness the departure of bats from the roost, and decode the intriguing "jamming" call used for securing prey.
The adventure continues with a leisurely walk back to the Nature Center, offering observations of nocturnal wildlife activity. Participants gather to unveil the results of the moth lighting trap, reinforcing the significance of native plants and waterways for the conservation of prey base. The event concludes with reflections on newfound knowledge and a discussion about further exploration into the fascinating world of bats.
