About the event
Comic Storytelling and Illustration Class
A five-class outdoor art and storytelling series
We are excited to welcome Carly Lake (www.CarlyLake.com) to lead this creative comic workshop for students ages 8+. Carly is a highly respected teaching artist whose previous classes with us, including watercolor, sketching, natural dye shibori, and creative bookmaking, have been some of our most loved and visually beautiful offerings.
In this five-class outdoor workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of writing and illustrating short-form comics. Through guided instruction and creative exploration, students will practice developing characters, building stories, understanding pacing, composing pages, designing layouts, and using ink and drawing techniques to bring their ideas to life. Students are encouraged to explore any artistic style they are drawn to, including cartoons, manga, graphic novels, or imaginative original designs.
Carly’s teaching style is calm, encouraging, and thoughtful. She creates a supportive environment where students feel confident experimenting, developing their own ideas, and building real storytelling and illustration skills. Each student’s creative voice is honored, and the finished comics are personal, expressive, and something students can feel genuinely proud of.
By the end of the series, each student will complete their own original short comic story, assembled into a finished booklet to take home. This class is perfect for students who love drawing, storytelling, comics, and creative expression. No prior comic or illustration experience is required... just curiosity and imagination.
