Parking is $12 per car at the gate
Recommended for 4th grade and up. Younger students may join with a parent.
Tracking requires patience, curiosity, quietude and a respect for nature to be successful.
Registrants will also receive a list of recommended reading for a deeper dive, sent in the "Everything You Need to Know" email being sent about one week before the workshop.
Introduction to Tracking Workshop
Join us for a hands-on tracking workshop where you'll uncover the mysteries of wildlife tracking. Discover how to find tracks of local wildlife, identify common species, and gain a basic tracking vocabulary. By the end, you'll see the world beneath your feet in a whole new light. This class is taught by Natural History Museum Program Manager, Sam Tayag!
What to Expect:
- Art Activity: Tracking is an art and a science:Express your creativity by leaving handprints in different substrates. Discuss the artistic side of tracking, exploring lines, shapes, colors, and textures.
- Tracking Walk and Casts: Immerse yourself in a science-based tracking walk. Engage in hands-on fieldwork, sketching and making casts of tracks found in the environment. Mountain lion, black bear, coyote, striped skunk, opossum, raccoon, grey fox, mule deer, ground squirrel, heron/shorebird, frog/lizard). Explore questions about the tracks' location, species, and the area's suitability as a habitat.
- Tracking Vocabulary and More:Learn fundamental tracking terms. Touch briefly on signs of life beyond tracks, including scat, burrows, grazing signs, and use trails.
- Collect and Wrap Track Casts: Wrap up your track cast creations and gather your discoveries.
Goal: Leave with a heightened awareness of wildlife tracks, basic tracking skills, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the art and science of tracking with us! 🌲🐾
