About the event
The Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer schooner used during the American Revolution. These ships were known for their speed and were used for smuggling. The ship is 118 feet long with a rig height of 100 feet… and 5,000 square feet of sail!
This is an incredible Maritime Leadership Academy utilizing traditional sailing skills to help youth develop life-long leadership skills. They will be a trip of self-discovery, challenging them to use critical thinking skills, learning the importance of teamwork, and feeling the exhilaration of success. The OI crew will also be firing the ship's cannon for them as a celebration once out to sea.
These sailing activities challenge students to be outside their comfort zone and succeed through teamwork and leadership skills. Each student will understand how different types of leaderships work together to succeed in a common goal.
This trip is led by the Ocean Institute staff. Students will learn about the mechanics of sailing by completing the rigging challenge, lifting and lowering cargo, and other hands-on activities. Students use their communication, leadership and teamwork skills as they row in Dana Point Harbor and sail out to sea aboard the Spirit of Dana Point.
