Dive into the underwater world of kelp forests with the Kelp Forest Ecosystem Series!
This three-part series will take students on an educational journey from virtual classrooms to the vibrant waters of Catalina Island. Each class in the series can be purchased individually, but together, they provide a complete understanding of kelp forest ecosystems and hands-on experience in community science. These classes are for ages 10-17.
Class 1: Kelp Forest Ecosystem Class
Learn about the interconnected relationships between fish, algae, and invertebrates in Southern California's kelp forests. This class introduces Reef Check’s vital work and dives deep into the health of these underwater ecosystems.

Class 2: Fish Identification ClassMaster the art of identifying fish species in kelp forests and prepare to apply your knowledge during real-world snorkel surveys. This interactive class also explores REEF’s global community science efforts.

Class 3: Community Science Snorkeling Workshop
Put your knowledge into action with an unforgettable day on Catalina Island! Students will revisit key lessons from the previous classes and conduct snorkel-based surveys at Casino Point Dive Park. Casino Point Dive Park’s vibrant ecosystem offers students a rare opportunity to see Giant Black Sea Bass, schools of fish, sea birds, and even sea lions—all in a protected underwater habitat! Collect data on fish species and contribute to vital conservation efforts.

Includes: Ferry, all dive gear, and the land=based and underwater lessons
Ferry leaves from Long Beach and Returns to Long Beach, time TBD

Supervision by HFAdventureCommunity Live-Scanned educators
If weather conditions cause the ferry to be cancelled, we will reschedule our classes.
This is a drop-off class for students in grades 5th-12th
Financial assistance may still be available for a limited number of ferry tickets ($94). Please contact us for the application to apply.
Students who have lost their homes due to fires qualify for a full fee waiver.
